Hope: Advent Week 3

Lighting the Advent Candle

Our Advent readers today are Allen, Kristy, Holley, Drew and Lillie Coker.

Tell us about your family.

Our family really likes to have fun together. We don’t take ourselves too seriously. We are common people who want others to be comfortable around us. We enjoy visiting with others and swapping stories about life and laughing a whole lot. We are loud and given to sarcasm. We have a good dose of perfectionism and stubbornness (we agonized over this description!) We are big MS State Bulldog fans, and even though we’ve always hated the Cowboys, we are now fans because of DAK! We love to cook new things, especially triple-chocolatey desserts. We are originally from Mississippi, but have spent the last ten years in Arkansas. We have been married almost twenty-two years. Our oldest child, Holley, is a sophomore biomedical engineering major at Harding University. Our son, Drew, is a sixth grader at Lakeside Middle School. Our youngest, Lillie, is four.

What initially drew you to the Lake Valley family?

When we served as pastors in the local church, the pastors and elders of Lake Valley encouraged and supported us greatly in our personal lives and in the ministry. We have known for some time that we share the same heart for Jesus that this church does. When we visited a few months ago, our children felt right at home, and so did we. We believe the Lord has brought us here as the next step in our journey with Him.

Today you are lighting the candle that represents “Joy.” What does that mean to you?

Our family has come to know that trusting Jesus has been pure joy, even in the midst of difficult circumstances. Recently, Kristy came across a quote on the Bible app that expresses perfectly what we have experienced. “Joy is a solid, identifying by-product that results from an intimate relationship with the King of all Kings.” We cling to 1 Peter 1:6 which says, “So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you must endure many trials for a little while.”

How can Lake Valley pray for you?

We ask the Lake Valley family to pray for three things. First, pray for us in discerning Jesus’ call to serve His Kingdom as a couple and as a family. Next, pray for us to have health and well-being. Finally, pray for us for God’s provision and stability for our family.
