Middle Schoolers. Preteens. Tweenagers. These words are used to describe kids who are stuck in the stage between being considered a child and actually being a teenager. No matter what you use to refer to them, they are still kids facing many changes, physically, mentally, and socially. Society constantly bombards them with demands, ideas, and values that are contrary to what God teaches in the Bible. It is our job as parents, teachers, and church members to come alongside them and give them the tools and skills needed to make sound, spiritual decisions. We are to teach, model and remind them of God’s plan for their growth, both spiritual and physical.
One of the best programs available for students at this time in their lives is My Best For You, a workshop for upper elementary/middle school students and their parents. This is a Christian education program designed to support families by helping adults and students to have real, relevant, and age-appropriate discussions about sexual integrity and the value of human life based on God’s unchanging truths. This is not about having a one-time conversation, but about opening the lines of communication between parents and their children that will continue through young adulthood. It is about helping our growing children begin to discover their own identity in Christ.
The facilitators, Lisa Newton and Tammy LeClerc, have been sharing this program with students and their parents for more than 20 years. For many years, Lisa worked with Clarity, the local Pregnancy Care center in Columbus, Indiana, and Tammy has been a middle-school health teacher at Northside Middle School, also in Columbus.
This is a two-part workshop that will take place here at Lake Valley on Saturday, January 26th from 1:00 – 4:00 pm, and on Sunday, January 27th from 12:00 – 3:30 pm. There will also be a parents-only session on Sunday, the 27th at 10:30am. The cost for the entire workshop is $30 per family for materials. Registration forms will be available at the Info Booth beginning January 6th.
The goal is simple. We want our kids to begin using Christian values to evaluate everything they see and hear. When our children know that their identity is in Christ, they will begin to make life decisions from a biblical perspective. If you have children or grandchildren in the upper elementary or middle school grades, please take advantage of the opportunity to participate in My Best for You on January 26th and 27th. – AMY SIMMONS
